Jay County’s Lizzy Schoenlein will be returning to the state gymnastics meet for the second year in a row. Schoenlein, a sophomore, qualified for state as an all-arounder Friday at the Huntington North Regional. She finished fifth in the all-around standings with a score of 36.350.
Schoenlein’s best individual event was beam, where she finished second with a score of 9.525. She was fourth on floor at 9.325. She finished eighth on bars with a score of 8.700 and 16th on vault at 8.800. She was the only competitor from East Central Indiana competing at Huntington North.
New Castle’s Kierstyn Cochran qualified on vault from the Columbus East Regional. Cochran tied for sixth in that event with a score of 9.45. New Castle finished fifth in the team standings at 101.325. Cochran is a sophomore who also qualified for state on vault last year.
The top three teams and top six individuals in each event qualify for state. Cochran was the only competitor from East Central Indiana to qualify for state from the Columbus East Regional.
Along with New Castle’s team, Central’s Clair Buchanan competed as an individual at Columbus East. Buchanan finished 18th in the all-around with a score of 31.225. Buchanan finished 22nd in both floor and bars, scoring 8.55 on floor and 7.9 on bars.
The state finals will be held at 1 p.m. on March 21 in Worthen Arena.
