Wapahani graduate Grant Evans has decided to transfer from Wright State after his first season of college basketball. Evans, who graduated from Wapahani in 2014, played in 21 games as a freshman, averaging 11.5 minutes and 1.8 points per contest.
“I just thought I could be somewhere else where I’d be happier and have a better college experience,” Evans said. “My time at Wright State, I enjoyed it. I thought I matured a lot, the year that I was there.”
Evans said he hopes to find a school with comparable geography to Wright State, allowing his family to continue to watch him play on a regular basis. And he’s also looking for a good fit in terms of style of play.
“Running up and down the floor I think is big, in transition, where a lot of shooters get 3-point shots,” Evans said. “So, I think kind of up-and-down a little bit. And then just a lot of drive-and-kick out to shooters. So I think that’s really kind of what suits me.”
Evans said playing time wasn’t a major factor in his decision. He said he expected to have to earn it as a freshman, and noted that his time on the court increased as the season progressed. He said he plans to look into his prospects for playing time at his next stop, but that he expects he will need to earn it there, too.
Wright State went 11-20 this past season, including 3-13 in the Horizon League. After Wright State lost to Illinois-Chicago in the conference tournament, Evans returned home for spring break. After discussing his plans to transfer with his family and Wapahani coach Matt Luce, he informed the Wright State coaching staff of his decision upon his return. He said he has not figured out a timetable for when he will select his next school.
Evans finished his Wapahani career as the school’s all-time leading scorer and averaged 25.5 points per game in his senior season en route to being named an Indiana All-Star. Wapahani won sectional championships in Evans’ junior and senior seasons, the school’s first since 1999.
