Zack Thompson
Three baseball players from East Central Indiana high schools were recently selected as Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association first-team all-state honorees. Cowan’s Luke Miller and Blue River’s Pete Wissel were named to the Class A team, while Wapahani’s Zack Thompson was selected to the Class 2A team.
Miller, who was selected to the Class A team as a shortstop, recently completed his senior season with the Blackhawks and is an Indiana signee. He hit .516 with 14 home runs and 21 total extra-base hits for Cowan, while also racking up the most innings pitched for his team. Miller went 5-2 with a 2.26 ERA on the mound.
“It’s just awesome,” Miller said of being named all-state. “It feels amazing, honestly.”
Wissel was named to the Class A squad as a pitcher. A Vincennes signee who was a senior this spring, Wissel went 8-4 with a 1.63 ERA in leading the Vikings to a sectional championship. He struck out 121 batters in 73 innings pitched while walking 34. He also hit .400 at the plate with five home runs.
Thompson was selected to the Class 2A team as a pitcher. He recently completed his junior season at Wapahani and is a verbal commit to Kentucky. Following his high school season, Thompson competed at USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars in late June in Cary, North Carolina. That tournament includes 108 elite players from across the country and is used as USA Baseball’s primary pool to select its 18U National Team.
He went 6-0 on the mound for the Raiders this season with a 0.49 ERA. He struck out 94 batters and walked 18 in 42 2/3 innings pitched. Thompson, a left-hander, missed some starts on the mound due to an issue with his throwing shoulder. He continued to hit, though, finishing his season with six home runs and 25 RBIs. He both pitched and hit in the Tournament of Stars, helping the Free team finish the event 3-1.
