WRESTLING
Yorktown went undefeated in its home 10-way invitational, knocking off state-ranked Prairie Heights 51-21 in the final. Three Tigers, Christian Hunt (106), Josh Stephenson (113), Remington Hiestand (132) and Cael McCormick (152) went undefeated. Of note, Hunt knocked off No. 12 Kyle Mockensturm in the finals in what coach Trent McCormick called a signature win.
“Of the 10 team, four of them will be at the team state duals Jan. 3,” said Trent McCormick, noting the Tigers faced two, plus a strong Elkhart Memorial squad. “We wrestled three of the top 36 teams in the state today. … There was some good competition.”
Monroe Central came in third at the Wapahani Raider Rumble, with Blackford fifth, Daleville sixth and Wapahani seventh. Knightstown won the event. Daleville’s Jonathon Drown was named top wrestler at the event, winning 160 pounds, whil Corbin Maddox (182) joined him as a fellow Broncos indevidual champion. Other local champions included Blackford’s Brady Swartz (120), Wapahani’s Jalde Lowe (126), Jared Coates (132) and Monroe Central’s Robert Ford (138), Garrett Calhoun (152), Colton Guy (170), Brian Blevins (195), and Kaiser Phillips (heavyweight).
Central went 3-2 at the New Castle Super Six, with both losses being decided by a single match. Cory Cooper (120) and Mykal Taylor (195) both posted undefeated days for the Bearcats (16-5).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Central picked up a 57-41 North Central Conference win against Anderson. Jayla Scaife posted a double-double with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Scaife, a junior, crossed the 1,000-point threshold for her career during the game. Fa’Tara Davis put up 11 points and for Central, and Ke’Chell Tate scored nine points for the Bearcats.
Yorktown hung close into the fourth quarter before eventually falling 43-32 to New Palestine in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. Jenna Irelan scored 12 in the loss and Katy Johnson added 10.
Union won its ninth consecutive game by defeating Mid-Eastern Conference foe Cowan 72-38. Leading the way for the Rockets (9-1, 4-0 MEC) was DeAnn Kauffman with 19 points, while Aijka Trojanova contributed a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds and Rylee Davis nearly had a triple-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and nine blocked shots. Carli Skinner led Cowan (5-5, 1-2 MEC) with 13 points.
Greenfield-Central pulled away in the third quarter and defeated Delta 75-35. Ericka Pursley and Sydney Decker each scored six points for Delta.
Monroe Central dominated the middle two quarters of a 53-26 Mid-Eastern Conference win against Blue River. The Golden Bears (3-8, 1-1 MEC) pitched a shutout in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 15-0. Abigail McGrath scored 20 for the Bears, while Emmarae Roberts added 14.
BOYS SWIMMING
Jay County posted 286 points to finish second behind the hosts at the Connersville Invitational, while New Castle was third with 154. James Keen won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke for the Patriots, while Jordan Turner was third in the 100 free for the Trojans.
Central came in fifth at the Zionsville Eagle Invite. Cullen Tyler was second in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, for the Bearcats’ top finish.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Jay County won the Connersville Invitational, posting eight first-place finishes for 349 points. New Castle was third with 199. Sophie Bader and Anne Vormohr each won two events for the Patriots. New Castle’s 400 relay team of Taylor Kelsik, Courtney Barr, Caroline Warner, Hannah Hawrot was second.
Central’s 201 points were good enough for fourth place at a deep Zionsville Eagle Invite. Bearcat diver Madison Cline came in fourth.
