Leaner, meaner Coleman sparking Central

Central’s Vince Coleman has come a long way since tearing his ACL as a sophomore.

Central’s Vince Coleman has come a long way since tearing his ACL as a sophomore.

MUNCIE — Vince Coleman finally came to a point where enough was enough. He knew how he’d reached that point — 250 pounds, 50 more than he was just a year before — but he had to slim down, or nine years of playing football wouldn’t end the way he wanted.

It started August 30, 2013. Coleman, then a sophomore linebacker for Central, was getting his first taste of varsity football. The previous year, he’d played on the junior varsity for rival Southside before transferring. During a first-quarter kick return, Coleman missed his block. Intent on making up for it, he tried to retreat but that put him right in the line of fire. A defender tried to tackle the Bearcats’ ball carrier, but he missed too, diving right into Coleman’s right knee. Coleman knew it right away; torn ACL, season over.

The thing about ACL injuries is that the physical rehab is only half of the battle. “It’s a grind. It’s stressful,” Coleman says. “You want to do more than you actually can. You feel like you can do more than you actually can. It’s really a mental thing.”

By December, Coleman had ballooned from 200 pounds to 250. He was depressed, understandably, about not being able to do anything. So he ate more, and he worked out less. All he did was go to rehab and go home, where he would sit around.

He tried to shed the extra weight as a junior, but he couldn’t. A linebacker for nearly all of his life, he was moved to defensive end in the second half of the season because he was too slow.

Enough was enough.

Ladale Scaife’s grandfather liked to tell him that he was lazy. And so one day, the grandfather got his grandson a trainer, hunting down Central assistant football coach Tommie Isom at the Northwest YMCA. Scaife, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound junior defensive tackle for Central, began working with Isom in April and Coleman soon followed.

They followed the same routine day after day: offseason lifting with the team after school for about 45 minutes, then straight to the YMCA for footwork, more lifting and occasionally some basketball. Isom would put them through ladder drills and cone drills to improve his agility, which is crucial for a middle linebacker. Coleman would return home around 7 p.m. each night.

“He doesn’t hop like he did last year (cracking a smile),” Scaife says, cracking a smile while he demonstrates the way Coleman used to accelerate. “Vince used to be kind of slow, but this year, he’s a beast now.”

Becoming “a beast” took time and patience. Coleman was reluctant to squat at first because of his knee; Isom, a former Southside player and a personal trainer in his free time, says that Coleman didn’t even want to squat 315 in fear of his knee buckling. Now, he can load up about 400 pounds.

“You wouldn’t think by the size he is that he’d have quick feet,” Isom says. “But he does.”

Scaife dropped 30 pounds working with Isom, and Coleman just a little less than that. They still work out Monday through Thursday, even as Central (2-2) is midseason.

And in addition to becoming lighter, Coleman no longer needs to wear a brace on his knee, which he did all of his junior season. At last, he can play free and easy.

Richmond had first-and-goal on Central’s 5-yard-line midway through the first quarter last Friday, looking for the first score of the game. Richmond speedster Jawuan Claiborne took a handoff and there was Coleman, stopping Claiborne for a two-yard loss. The next play, Coleman burst through the line to nab Parker Holland for a four-yard loss. Coleman, just like that, completely changed the possession and the Red Devils eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Free and easy indeed.

The 6-foot Coleman has given opponents plenty of headaches with three interceptions and leading the Bearcats in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks heading into Friday night’s game with visiting Arsenal Tech.

To get to this point, he’s changed his entire mindset. McCulloch Park became like a second home to him on days off from school — whether it be weekends, holidays or summer break. He’s out there running hills by 8 a.m., then home for chores like doing the dishes or mowing the lawn, then back to the YMCA.

The time in his life when he put on all of that weight is in the rearview mirror.

“Leadership is probably the area he’s improved in the most,” Central coach Adam Morris says. “He’s gotten everything else straight in his life, and football is kind of the result of everything. He’s put in a lot of work.”

Mahan’s run was the only score for the Bruins, while the Golden Eagles went on to score three more times in the fourth quarter, giving the home team the 37-point victory.

Tigers rebound to take down Warriors

GASTON — After the Yorktown volleyball team fell in the second set of its battle against Wes-Del, Yorktown had two options. Either let Wes-Del ride the momentum and upset the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A, or fight back and protect its undefeated record.

The Tigers chose the latter.

Yorktown (19-0) defeated Wes-Del in four sets 25-11, 21-25, 25-10, 25-13, coming back with a vengeance after dropping just its second set of the season.

After easily taking the first set, the Tigers appeared to relax, allowing the Warriors dynamic offensive duo of Alysa Sutton and Emily Hale to work their team back into the match, without much resistance at times.

It wasn’t something Yorktown coach Stephanie Bloom was happy about.

“It felt like we weren’t playing hard. We were back on our heels and not playing with the aggression we need to be successful,” she said. “So I had to light a fire under them.”

Her team listened to her message and responded by taking a 13-1 lead to start the third set, putting any struggles from the previous set behind them. The offense was spurred at the time by Kate Avila, a senior outside hitter who went on to finish the match with 10 kills, also adding an ace and six digs.

She had three kills in the first eight points for Yorktown, reestablishing the aggression Bloom said went missing during the second set.

“We knew the second game was rocky and we needed to come out stronger in the third set,” Avila said. “We wanted to come out with more intensity and grit defensively, we had to get tougher.”

Without Darian Jackson playing, other Yorktown players picked up the slack. Olivia Reed finished the match with a team-high 13 kills, and Kenzie Knuckles followed her with 11.

The Tigers fed Knuckles often to start the match, with varied success. It was her first game back from an injury that caused her to miss several games, looking rusty at times, but still producing for her team.

During the first set, her attacks seemed to be finding Sutton’s right arm in the back row as often as they were finding the hardwood. Despite not having the success she’s used to, Bloom said having Knuckles involved early and throughout the game would help the freshman’s confidence.

She was also important cog for the Tiger’s defense, finishing with a team-high 22 digs.

“She’s been out for a while so getting her back into a rhythm was important,” Bloom said. “She’s our kill leader, so we needed to get her involved offensively.”

When Sutton wasn’t trying to dig attacks, she was leading the Wes-Del offense. She finished with a team-high 13 kills, but it was clear Yorktown was focusing its block on her. Several times, she was denied at the net or sent an attack out of bounds, trying to hit around the block. Kendall Murr made life miserable at the net for Wes-Del attackers, finishing with 4.5 blocks and spurring a defense that sprung to life after the second set.

Hale had 10 kills for the Warriors.

Clawson paves way for Mills, Delta in win

Logan Clawson

Logan Clawson

MUNCIE — Zach Mills has had his share of big games this season, but the Delta tailback had nothing on his lead blocker Friday night – well, at least in the first half.

Mills had his usual monster evening — boy, did he ever — but his 225-pound fullback Logan Clawson actually one-upped him early on. Normally opening up the holes for the dynamic Mills, Clawson showed off his athleticism against visiting New Castle.

Clawson looked more like a springy tailback than a burly fullback as he rumbled for a 65-yard touchdown in the second quarter, one of the many highlights in Delta’s 55-20 win in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

“I was telling people, ‘Man, I felt like Marshawn Lynch,’” Clawson said with a laugh. “Just breaking free from people.

“I was confident (I could do it), but I’m nowhere close to Zach and being as agile as him,” he added. “But I luckily got it.”

Mills did have another big night, finishing with 229 yards and five touchdowns – but he also needed 14 carries just to surpass Clawson’s long run. Clawson totaled 94 yards on five carries.

Clawson obviously doesn’t get the volume of carries that Mills does, but the star running back took notice.

“He’s a big guy,” Mills said, “so he just runs over people.”

Mills was actually “held” to 60 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in the first half, but he had 169 and three scores on 20 carries in the second half. He now has 16 touchdowns in six games this season.

“I missed some assignments. At halftime we figured that out and fixed it,” Clawson said of what led Mills’ increased production in the second half. “I talk to him out there on the field, and he just tells me which way he’s going to go most of the time.”

Ryley Pease was 7 of 13 for 121 yards, throwing touchdown passes to Mitchell Hahn and Collin Hart as Delta (4-2, 3-1 conference) won its third straight game.

Mills scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards in the first quarter to stake Delta to a 12-0 lead. After New Castle’s Brady Renner scored the first of his two touchdowns, Clawson got his chance.

With the Eagles utilizing Mills’ speed on the outside, Clawson provided a change of pace up the middle. After accumulating 125 yards in his first five games, he got over half that with his burst through the line and into to the second level, as the New Castle secondary nipped at his heels.

“I was worried because I saw all them running at me, and I was just hoping they didn’t take out my ankles,” Clawson said. “I was just surprised I got free from it.”

Later, Clawson got back to his main job description with the rest of a dominant offensive line, headed by Ball State commit Kaleb Slaven. Delta ran for 330 yards while holding New Castle (1-5, 0-4) to 76. Blake Green’s two first-half interceptions helped Delta take a 28-6 lead into intermission.

Mills, meanwhile, seemed to pick up steam as night went on. He had scoring runs of 1 and 14 yards in the third quarter before a 49-yard touchdown on the last of his 32 carries with 3:59 left.

“I get the ball 30 times per game, so I’m getting used to it. It was rough in the first part of the season, but now, I’m used to it more.”

MUNCIE — Delta boys tennis coach Tim Cleland says the hallmark of a good program is consistency.

After all, he would know. His team competed in the Delta Invitational Saturday, and will play for its 23rd consecutive sectional title later this week. Over those years, Delta has made a habit of beating teams that the program feels it should beat, one of the biggest keys to being consistent for Cleland.

There’s no player on Delta’s current team that was even close to being born when the Eagles began their run of dominance. Throughout that time, coaches have pushed the Eagles to focus on fundamentals, staying in the moment and not looking ahead to future matches.

“This game favors those who can operate at the same level on the court every time they go out,” Cleland said. “You can’t just hit a flashy winner every once in a while and break down on other points.

“All you’ve got there is a YouTube highlight and no trophy to show for it.”

Trying to focus on the current match and not look ahead to sectional play isn’t easy, especially for Delta’s No. 1 singles player Alec Robillard.

With the postseason around the corner, he still had a championship match looming later that night.

“You’re already looking forward to what teams you’re going to play in the sectional and what players you’ll face,” Robillard said. “Keeping focused on the match you’re currently playing can be tough.”

Part of what keeps Delta consistent is the schedule it has faced. All season, the Eagles have been challenged by some of the top teams in the state.

Playing top-notch competition forces Delta to raise its level of play, also allowing the players to fine tune their skills and perform against other competition at a more consistent level.

And the Eagles engage every opponent the same, regardless of skill level.

“We don’t treat any match as bigger than any other match,” Robillard said. “So if we’re playing a top-10 ranked team, we don’t treat that any differently than a routine conference opponent.”

Being one of the best teams in the area for decades can come with a price, namely that every team sets out to make a statement and knock off that team.

But Cleland is used to Delta facing the pressure.

“There have been a lot of years with a target on our back,” he said. “It’s good to be in the crosshairs and have the pressure on you.”

Reece Malapit shot a 75 at the Lapel Regional to qualify for state.

For the first time as an individual, Reece Malapit is headed to the state tournament.

The Yorktown junior shot a 75 at the Lapel Regional on Saturday to seize the final individual spot. She will compete at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel next Friday and Saturday. She’s the only competitor from the three teams that advanced from the Central Sectional (Yorktown, Central, Jay County) to advance.

And she didn’t even feel like her performance was up to par.

“I hate to say it, but it was a bad 75,” Malapit said. “I’m thankful that I’m going to state and I’m really stoked for it.”

Malapit said the greens were fast and she had trouble sticking her shots. She bogeyed a number of holes but still finished strong enough to move on. She built off the strong performance she had at the Central Sectional last week.

It’s not the first time she’s been to state as she advanced with Yorktown’s team as a freshman. She tied for 38th, shooting a 162 during the two-day event.

This time, she said she hopes to finish in the top 15.

“I’m just going to work my butt off, practice every day after school like usual,” Malapit said.

Yorktown finished 11th and shot a 354. Central was 17th and shot a 404, while Jay County was 18th and shot a 428. Holly Haynes had the second-best score for Yorktown, shooting a 78. New Castle’s Olivia Porter and Delta’s Ashley Powell each shot 92, while Olivia Phillips led Central with a 95.

Cathedral won the regional, finishing with a score of 311. Cathedral’s Betsy Werner was medalist with a 70.

MUNCIE — It’s rare that Central boys tennis coach Don Wafer starts a freshman at a varsity position, so rare that he struggles to recall any other than current junior Khamasi Muhiga.

But freshman Erich Ong falls into that rare category. He plays No. 3 singles for the Bearcats after starting the season playing No. 1 doubles with Bobby Cunningham, rapidly moving up the ranks and earning Wafer’s trust in the process. He’ll have one of his biggest tests to date Wednesday, when Central faces Delta in the Delta Sectional.

“Usually freshmen just aren’t ready,” Wafer said. “He has grown by leaps and bounds since day one … he’s a versatile player because wherever we put him, he fits right in.”

It’s a process that’s come quickly for Ong. He started playing tennis in June 2014, after playing baseball and deciding he didn’t enjoy it. After getting a taste of tennis in school, he took lessons at a Muncie YMCA and eventually tried out for Central’s team.

Not that he had high hopes going into the tryout. Wafer told Ong that he wasn’t sure if the freshman would have a spot on the varsity roster, and Ong himself was unsure if he felt ready to be there.

Wafer described Ong as naive when the season began, preferring to stay quiet and sit in the background. Now he’s more assertive and feels comfortable in the program as the more seasoned players learned about him and he felt accepted.

At just 14 years old, Ong described himself as “only about 5-foot-something,” and knows he isn’t a terrifying physical target. Playing against taller, more experienced players can be a challenge.

“Usually they’re about 6-foot-4 so I can’t lob it and that’s frustrating,” Ong said, laughing. “I try to be polite, I don’t want to make any enemies.”

When he played doubles earlier in the season, Ong avoided the net, preferring to pace the baseline. Staying close to the net is a necessity when playing doubles, part of why Wafer said he’s a superior singles player.

Even so, Ong said he enjoys doubles and the teamwork that comes with it. Earlier during the season when Central was facing Jay County, Ong was playing doubles with Clark Tinder. As Ong went to continue the rally, he drilled Tinder in the back.

“When someone comes to the net, I don’t like to go around, I try to push it through,” Ong said.

When the season started, Ong preferred to warm up with other freshmen and junior varsity players. After seeing him dominate, Wafer forced him to play against more advanced competition, now holding his own against some of the best Central has to offer.

His youth is one of his biggest advantages. With three years of high school left, Wafer expects him to continue growing, with no doubt in his mind where Ong will be in a couple of years when he’s a junior.

“He’ll be playing No. 1,” Wafer said. “When it’s all said and done, I think he’ll be one of the best players to ever come through for us.”

MUNCIE — Yorktown’s No. 3 singles player Wilson Trulock wasn’t in an ideal situation.

With his Tigers and the Burris Owls deadlocked 2-2 at the Delta Sectional, he trailed opponent Ben Adams 1-0 after the first set.

A senior, dropping just one more set meant his career would end, and so would the Yorktown season.

Trulock dominated the second set 6-0 and took the third 6-3, finishing a job he wasn’t expecting to have. He said he didn’t think he’d be playing No. 3 singles when he woke up in the morning, but had no problem doing whatever Yorktown needed.

“I knew that the first set was close, and I had faced this guy before,” Trulock said. “I wanted to be on top, I knew he’s a tough, consistent opponent with an equal forehand and backhand.”

For many athletes, doubt could start to creep into their mind after dropping the first set, especially with the stakes so high.

Not for Trulock. Faced with a win or go home scenario, he said the possible pressure wasn’t even on his mind. He orchestrated the comeback, never appearing to be out of rhythm or focus. Yorktown coach Bob Darby said both he and Trulock were confident after dropping the first set, knowing the senior had played well despite the loss.

“There’s a little bit more on the line, especially for the seniors who may be thinking, ‘This may be the very last match I ever play.'” Darby said. “He drove the ball through the court very well from both sides, especially during the first set when the wind was blowing.”

When the sectional started, Darby thought the winner would be decided during No. 3 singles or No. 2 doubles. Although it did come down to the battle between Trulock and Adams, it was the No. 2 doubles match setting it up.

With Burris trailing 2-1 overall, Donald Ward and Isaac Taylor won 6-3, 6-4, forcing the result to revolve around the winner of the No. 3 singles match. Trulock said he wasn’t expecting his match to be the deciding factor, although he wasn’t fazed when he realized it would be.

And with everyone circled around the court watching the final set, Trulock made his mark.

“Wilson probably played the best he’s played all season,” Darby said. “Rarely missed, I’m very proud and pleased with how he played, he was very solid.”

Throughout the past few seasons, Trulock said he’s watched Ian Landwehr and the doubles team of Mitchell Minniear and Abe Rosenthall. Even if he wasn’t trying to win for himself, he was doing it so they could continue their seasons.

“I honestly look up to them and want to be as good as them,” Trulock said. “It’s an honor to keep them alive.”

Yorktown’s Landwehr won at No. 1 singles, while No. 1 doubles Minniear and Rosenthall also won. For Burris, Joseph Patashinsky won at No. 2 singles. Delta defeated Central 5-0, with 6-0, 6-0 wins coming from No. 2 singles Joe Wegener and No. 3 singles Jason Wegener.

Jay County Sectional

Winchester took down Jay County 4-1 in the opening round. Arick Miller picked up the Golden Falcons’ 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Mason Melton and Trey Graft won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Garrett Rodgers earned the Patriots’ lone victory at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-4.

Marion Sectional

Blackford fell to Marion 5-0. Scott Thompson suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss for the Bruins at No. 1 singles.
