The Central boys basketball team had grown accustomed to being able to get a lot from high-scoring wing Phillip Corthen.
Saturday against a strong opponent in Noblesville, they needed a bit more from the rest of the roster.
Corthen poured in 22 points, nearly half of Central’s output, but the Bearcats couldn’t muster quite enough in a 50-45 loss to a powerful Millers squad. The game was tight throughout with Central leading by a point at half and trailing by the same margin entering the final quarter.
Both teams played a clean contest with only 12 combined turnovers, but free throws played a big role in the outcome. Central (5-6) only hit 7-of-8, while Noblesville (9-3) got to the line 20 times, hitting 14.
Outside Corthen’s 22, big center Donald Allen added eight with 12 rebounds and point guard Marcus Dukes had 6. Sean Wilson, Jon Kiser and Joey Brewer all hit double figures for the Millers.
• Yorktown wins: Yorktown maintained an early lead to defeat the Blackford Bruins, 50-26.
